• So, if you following the happens on the morning show, you already know that I’m using bacon in a “breakfast cookie.”

After a few have asked me about HOW I plan on doing this, here it is…

    To candy the bacon:

I used a foil lined baking sheet, and one pack of bacon.

You’ll want to lay out your bacon strips in the pan as close as you can together, if you have a cooling rack, you can place that in a cookie sheet and lay your bacon on that. Coat liberally with your brown sugar, and cook at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Let cool completely before breaking up into bacon bits.

    Next, the cookie part:

    1 cup of butter
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
    1/4 candied bacon
    1 tsp Cream of Tartar
    1 tsp Baking soda
    1 1/2 cup white flour
    1 cup Oatmeal

Mix your butter and brown sugar together first. Then add the flour, and only add one cup at a time until its well mixed. Add the Cream of Tartar and Baking Soda next, once again making sure its well mixed in before moving to the next step.

Add the oatmeal and mix again. Using a wooden spoon, FOLD in the chips and bacon bits. Bak for 15-19 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool completely.

    Serve, and Enjoy!

  • where good shows go to get..gooder

    Blip.tv

It’s taken some time for my to digest exactly what my maniacal daily figure checking has come up with as far as the future of the site and of where I post my web show archives and behind the scenes films, but I have made a decision:

I’m not going to be renewing my Blip.tv account this month. I can use their free service to continue to host certain videos, but paying a site to host your videos just seems dumb.

I love their interface, and the fact that I can make all my videos play in any order I want to as well as download the original files I uploaded prior to conversation is a wonderful thing. The main player you see when you open up my site, is provided by Blip.tv. It works just like a DVR on my end, I can shuffle and move videos in the playlist and instantly my website is updated.

Thing is though, I overthought and overbought when I made a “Pro” account there. My show is a little show in the grand scheme of things, and Blip needs you to have a viewing audience of about 100,000 to really see some performance from them. It’s a destination site, people have to know about it to know how to find it… and its not a hugely advertised site. When did you last see an ad for them? It’s like I needed a bus ticket and bought a Caddy instead… it’s too particular for a tiny producer like me to fit in at.

YouTube, for now, remains the only place I should post videos if I actually want them watched. Hands down.

People have told me to try vimeo, but I don’t know… it is a paid service as well. Why pay someone for something that takes hours and hours of work, and makes you nothing in return? Pretty silly this movie making internet thing…

Unless anyone has ideas… it’s bye bye Blip.

When you are thinking holidays, do you think about carbs and calories? This year marks the first year I’ve seriously managed my diet. Ok, I have had a TON of help from my girlfriend… BUT I’ve started making better choices, like these: 10 grams of carbs versus the average 25 grams in all the chips at Subway. How do you choose healthy?

  • Ever notice that when you get REALLY busy, you actually start to have fun? Then, as you’re going along… say learning some new software… you start wanting to have MORE fun… so you do a video a day. Later, you’re REALLY REALLY having fun, then you realize you spend every waking moment you have cranking out as many videos as you humanly can.

You start seeing the world in scale, and framing, and then you realize that you’re insane.

Least that’s how it happened for me! More video projects to come…

  • It didn’t take long for the secret to get out over the internet…after 4 years, I’m returning to morning shows. Er, did return…as of yesterday in fact!

The plan to make a change on our station was one that was mulled over, fought over, and eventually decided on through means that were sometimes humorous, and often frustrating. That’s just how this industry works…

BUT, it’s meant a change in schedule that has had some… unforeseen perks. I now have a block of time Monday through Wednesday where I have nothing scheduled as far as my operations job goes. Guess what I’m thinking?

    Either:

    1. I bring back a full on webshow (done from home though, no studio show) and broadcast it through my site

    or

    2. It’s time to make some DIY videos and some more short films, possibly another “silent film”

You’ve seen my silent film right? It’s called “The Runner” and it was NOT comedy. You can see it here.

    What do you think?

  • Next week starts a whole new chapter of my radio life, but seriously, lately I’ve been really loving the experience of mixing video!

I’ve always, always, always loved learning new things. Software and me, we have a history. I love learning new software like most kids love video games. Final boss? Exporting my first project… And ever since I learned how to do that, I’ve been cranking out a lot of videos! You’ve probably noticed from the homepage…

I’ve also been trying Blip.tv’s Pro service on my latest endeavors, and am starting to realize some differences in the way you do things for YouTube and Blip. Mainly: I don’t think a Blip.tv account is for everyone…hell, it probably really isn’t for me. You need a MASSIVE audience to make any real funds from posting your videos there…and there isn’t a lot of cross traffic to help expose your content to others from what I’ve seen so far.

So for this month, I’ll continue to try it out… but seriously? Unless someone gives me a ringing endorsement for revenue, audience, and ease of use… I may just pull all my videos from everywhere, and just stick to YouTube.

    Thoughts?

  • Ugh, It’s only been half a week and already my personal vacation is over. Before you start to say things like “Why did you take a vacation?!” …Let me remind everyone that this was my first vacation in 2 years that didn’t involve flying all over the country and working in other jobs versus actually taking time off…

Last vacation before this one? House burned down in NC. The one before that? Dad’s health problems in NC. The vacation before that? I had surgery… In other words, I never take time off for purely recreational reasons.

Feels nice at first, but to say that I didn’t miss my work would be like saying Mickey Mouse was a rat terrier…

Problem: What if I need to miss it? I’ve been wrestling with it for a while now, but its looking like it time to turn the page on this chapter of life and move on to other things.

Problem: What other things? I’ve wanted to pursue a talk show for radio that wasn’t tech related, a TV show about random skits performed in front of strangers, a stand up comedy performance or two, and why not…I wanted to make a film too.

So yeah, my vacation’s over and now I wonder if it shouldn’t instead turn into a short hiatus?
Who knows what will happen if I left…

  • I recently have become bored with just knowing audio editing, and started making videos so I can learn the software.

The funny thing, once I started learning to do it for myself, I thought: Why not show how to do things? I needed projects to film, and growing up in NC with my Dad as my guide, I learned a LOT of things. Why not put them on video?

So I did. Then, I did again, and again, and again… I am really starting to like it! It’s not only the feeling that I can use the software, its the whole spirit of “doing it yourself”. I love working on things myself. It’s liberating! Now, how to spread that feeling of knowing how to fix things yourself?

    Videos. Lots of Videos.

So, if you’ve ever wondered how things are done…if you’ve ever had a question that you would like to see done, email me. I’ll try to post a few a week as I have time to, but I’ll need your help.

Send me your ideas. If I use one, I’ll make sure you get credit for the question we answer in that vid.

    Now, back to editing…

  • So today, I’m officially launching, for better or worse, the new shaggy live.com. Its not like I ever quit doing stuff on the web, but fans of the old stickam/ustream days will notice the changes made. Since stopping the web shows as per my agreement with the late Greg Everette, I’ve been steadily working on the Q103 website and streaming problems we had in the early days.

I probably will never do a live web show again, unless its for another endeavor I’ve been thinking of…which is a little more like a showcase of stuff versus a request show like my last one was.

Got any suggestions to make the site better? Let me know. I’m pretty much doing all these things alone, so the more help and input, the better!
